Corby Hall was the family home of John Hough. John Hough was a noted surveyor who was employed to lay out the town of Georgetown, which is today known as Leesburg, Virginia, located approximately eight miles southeast of Corby Hall. Leesburg served as a haven for the United States Government and its archives during the War of 1812 when Washington, D.C. was evacuated due to the invading British Army. These archives included the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and portraits of many early American leaders. John Hough was also involved in George Washington’s scheme to provide ship transportation above the Great Falls of the Potomac. The plan was to provide a canal with locks. Mr. Hough was one of the trustee’s of the company along with George Washington, John Janney, and others. George Washington was his guest in the home on June 1st and 2nd of 1788.
